Question [May. 26th, 2008|02:13 pm]
Music Theory Forum

I received a chart from a friend of mine that had a symbol and / or accidental I do not recognize. It looks similar in some ways to a Grace Note but I'm clueless as to what it is and it's meaning. Here's a screen shot, maybe someone here knows. It the italic "X" in the image:

Maybe I have a bad memory or something, it doesn't ring any bells.

Looks like a weird turn...

Sometimes jazz fonts screw things up, so who knows.

Thanks much dontsayroscoe, the chart was printed from a Logic Pro score. It may be the software as well.

Normally, that's a kind of old-fashioned symbol for an ornament: it seems usually to refer to a mordent, but I don't think it has as fixed a meaning as some other ornament notations do. I am used to seeing it in keyboard music by Haydn and the French clavecinistes. Whether that's what it means in this context (not classical music, by the looks of it?) is impossible for me to say.

Btw, you know most of the action is on musictheory, don't you?

Hey thanks for the reply, I will look into it. When I was on LJ a few years ago I was in a musictheory grp, I don't remember the name though unfortunately. I posted this in the LJ grp that had the most recent post.
