And Now What...After a Cadence? [Jul. 6th, 2009|03:11 am]

One can find lots of information on cadences, but one thing I haven't been able to find are the different ways new phrases are started after a given cadence. And also how this relates to any specific musical styles eras. Does anybody have any light to share on what I'm talking about?

Multiple choice test...wrong answer suggestions? [Oct. 22nd, 2008|12:55 pm]

I'm teaching a non-major intro to music class this semester, and I've given up all hope of a short answer test, so I've resorted to ::sigh:: multiple guess choice. The Mannheim rocket is going to be on the next test, so I'm trying to think of what to put with it as a wrong answer.

The text we use calls it both a "rocket theme" and a "Mannheim rocket," meaning both will have to show up in the answer choice. However, if it's the only answer choice with that structure, it will stand out, and as those of us in the standardized test industry know, the "odd man out" is a prime candidate for guessing.

So, I want to think of a few other musical concepts with a similar construction ("[NOUN], or [NATIONALITY] [NOUN]") to toss in there as possible wrong answers. I've already thought of "augmented sixth harmony, or Italian sixth chord", but I'd need at least 2 (preferably 3) more possibilities. I don't want to make anything up whole cloth (like "4/4 time, or Polish meter"), lest these guys actually retain that as a real musical term ("Yeah, that band only plays in 4/4." "What, are they Polish? HAHA! Music joke, right?"), but I don't mind if it's way out of left field.

Anyway, if you can think of anything, I'd be much obliged.

Question [May. 26th, 2008|02:13 pm]

I received a chart from a friend of mine that had a symbol and / or accidental I do not recognize. It looks similar in some ways to a Grace Note but I'm clueless as to what it is and it's meaning. Here's a screen shot, maybe someone here knows. It the italic "X" in the image:

Maybe I have a bad memory or something, it doesn't ring any bells.

Breaking away from writing the notes. [Apr. 15th, 2008|12:26 am]

This is rather fundamental question. I always write notes in my sheet music to sort of aid my sight reading. Is there any way for me to ween myself off of this slowly over a course of months? I've used it as a crutch but it's got a point where I'm ashamed and averse to learning and wish to correct my behavior in order to improve as a musician. Any tips would be great. Thanks.

Im a guitarist, i've been playing for 14 years, im now 20. I am fairly new to music theory, i have taken guitar lessons (for a while from Jason Moss of the Cherry Poppin Daddies) and ive even taken a music fundamentals class, and i understand a lot but one thing that gets me time and time again are the modes *insert suspensful music here* Ive got the basic concept of the Maj scale modes but im having trouble applying that. Any suggestions or tips on learning to fully understand the modes?

Thanks for anyhelp..

I just wanted to say what's up? I'm from Stuart, Florida and am a music major. I play the bass (electric and upright) in my college's jazz band and am considering starting up my own jazz deal. Anyway I just wanted to introduce myself and hopefully I can help with any questions or problems you are having with theory, and maybe can get a few problems solved myself! Thanks guys!

Welcome to the Music Theory Forum. I'll start off the community with the first post.

What do you think about chords (Yes, it's trite, but I'm in a hurry)
